Todd Osborn

Spectral, Rephlex, Ann Arbor

A man of multiple activities and genres, long-time DJ/producer Todd Osborn uses a variety of aliases - no doubt to soundtrack the numerous car journeys around Motor City. As well as running the legendary Dubplate Pressure record store in Ann Arbor, Todd has occupied an important place in the local Ann Arbor scene, providing the vision behind the ragga jungle label, Rewind!, and holding events throughout the Detroit area. As a musician, Todd produces old-school-inspired jungle as Soundmurderer with Mullinix (as SK-1), as well as booty with Brian Gillespie as Starski & Clutch. Under his four-to-the-floor alias, Osborne, Todd creates classic house and techno for Ghostly's Spectral Sound imprint. Occupying the space between jacking acid techno and piano-led house, Todd's 12"s for Spectral have earnt him a rep across several continents. You won't need an electron microscope to search for the kaleidoscopic body of work that Todd has produced, but let's face it - if we had a note for every bizarre story or curious piece of equipment that Todd has bought, built or designed, we'd be rich like Croesus. As a lecturer at the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome, Todd explained how he uses a hexadecimal tracker running a whole load of analogue gear to make his gritty, grainy beats. It's this kind of unique and personal approach to music that informs his DJing performances, so expect a journey from The Wizard, to an oblique fractured future.
