Steinski

Tommy Boy, NYC

Forefather of all the zanier aspects of turntablism, Steinski created a succession of extra-legal works of studio art - 'Lesson One: The Payoff Mix', 'Lesson Two: The James Brown Mix', 'Lesson 3: The History Of Hip Hop' - that quickly became DJ landmarks and acknowledged as three of the most influential works in the world of hip hop and dance music production. Steinski, born Steve Stein, was a DJ and record collector when he wasn't working as an advertising agent. In 1983 he heard of a Tommy Boy competition to remix G.L.O.B.E. & Whiz Kid's 'Play That Beat Mr. DJ' and hooked up with studio engineer Douglas DiFranco, better known as Double Dee. The two came up with their infamous 'Payoff Mix' and for most hip hop fans, Double Dee & Steinski entered the realm of the legendary. The duo's influence on sampladelic hip hop was enormous and their records are still cited as defintive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Norman Cook, among others. Although Double Dee currently pursues a career in sound design for television, Steinski has remained active in recent years, doing occasional remix work and longer old-school mixes, as well as DJing regularly in Europe. He also produced dozens of soundtracks for TV, radio and films, and was featured in the documentary 'Scratch'. On this session Steinski is joined by the infamous Z-Trip, who's probably one of the most influential figures on the DJ circuit in North America these days. Some of his early releases and mash-up 12"s such as 'Uneasy Listening' have become highly sought after collectibles. You can find him at one of his multiple residencies in hip hop clubs around the world and headlining festivals such as Coachella. Z-Trip can also be seen in the movie 'Scratch' and 'Scratch Live' alongside Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike and originators like Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay. In addition he's appeared in 'Brainfreeze' and 'Product Placement', two live concert movies, both of which feature friends DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist.
