Tribute to - The Burrell Brothers

Deepsounds

Toulouse, France

Ronald and Rheji Burrell are the dynamic duo that shaped the legendary Nu Groove label. Dubbed as one of New York's 'designer labels', Nu Groove coined a certain style and era in the melting pot's rich dance history. Founded by Judy Russell and Frank plus Karen Mendez, in order to give people like Joey Beltram, Bobby Konders, Kenny Dope or first and foremost the Burrell Brothers a platform to manifest their musical visions, Nu Groove was one of the most influential labels from 1988 to 1992. Alongside other outlets like Bottom Line, the infamous Strictly Rhythm or New Jersey's Movin' imprint, it had a prolific, mysterious and most of all mesmerizing output. Instrumental for the label's success were twins Ronald and Rheji. Working under several monikers (Metro, KATO, Tech Trax Inc, Aphrodisiac, NY Housin' Authority, B.M.E. et al) the Burrells melted their mellow jazz-drenched r&b aesthetics with raw and thumping house grooves, resulting in a very distinct and blissful sound signature. Classic cuts like 'Song Of The Siren' by Aphrodisiac or Bas Noir's heart-warming 'I'm Glad You Came To Me' sound as cracking as they did back then. Their love is magic! Frenchman Fred Portet from Toulouse pays tribute to the Burrells for us with a special edition of his infamous Deepsounds sessions. Fred has been running his radio show for more than a decade now, dedicated to timeless underground sounds from house, disco and techno soul to all kinds of other beautiful grooves. Always aiming to discover those special pieces of black gold, whether old or new, Deepsounds has become one of those airwave institutions music lovers around the globe wouldn't want to miss anymore.
