One of the most consistent purveyors of African music with an unmistakable Cuban twist, young Chico aka Marcos Garcia was raised on the works of Willie Colon, Fela Kuti and Afrika Bambaataa, all spiced up with the "get out there and do it yourself" mentality of the first breakdance wave. His father, head of the Merengue record label, tried to keep him out of the shady music business but you know what kids can be like... Chico eventually got to learn almost every single instrument to be played with two hands and became a full time member of the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. However, on his solo pieces for Wax Poetics Records, Chico Mann develops his very own blend of afrobeat, Latin freestyle and those typical synth-heavy electro beats that used to rule the block parties of his formative years. Check out his live set at FILTER Magazine's Culture Collide Festival 2011 in Los Angeles.
