A multi-instrumentalist who (to paraphrase Archie Bell & the Drells) not only raps but can sing just as good as he wants, Aloe Blacc is truly a product of his environment. Aloe formed the indie duo Emanon with buddy DJ Exile while still in high school, and triumphantly returned to recording, dropping Emanon’s full length debut, The Waiting Room, last year, and a stunning solo debut, Shine Through, on Stones Throw this past summer. The latter’s fusion of acoustic guitar-driven folk tunes, digital R&B seduction suites, and polyrhythmic workouts is as deft as it is def. And he’s still got the cojones to pull off a Latinized rendition of John Legend’s neo-quiet storm standard 'Ordinary People.' Bravo, Aloe!
