Sonar Sessions

Tunng

Full Time Hobby, UK

British collective Tunng recently created some waves among music lovers and tastemaking connoisseurs with their beautiful album "Comments Of The Inner Chorus". Their mesmerizing mixture of acoustic folk, electronic crackles, gorgeous harmonies, bewitching mantras and synthetic beats is simply breathtaking. In 2003 Mike Lindsay and singer-songwriter Sam Genders started to work together in the studio, writing early material in all kinds of permutations, sometimes full songs, sometimes just tiny sketches. After releasing their debut album "Mother's Daughter And Other Songs" it didn't take too long until Tunng caught the interest of a wider audience. Looking for like-minded spirits to take their unique sound to the stage, they found Becky Jacobs and Ashley Bates to do the vocals at gigs instead of Sam, who remains a mystery man in the shadows (or at least in Derbyshire, where he lives). Other members joined the band soon after such as Phil Winter, Martin Smith and Dave Lewis-Floyd, who all play with the band in one way or another - and have all contributed to their breakthrough and great success of the last album. So now Tunng exist as a tough little unit with post-rave soundsystem ethos where everyone contributes according to their skills and wishes. Tunng's Sonar session is followed by a DJ Set from Cedric Woo (Beauty & The Beat/Voices, London). Cedric's appetite for eclectic sounds can be traced throughout his musical and physical journeys. Starting out as a DJ at Radio Campus Clermont-Ferrand, France, in the mid 90s, he quickly organised his first own parties, while his original background in indie rock and all things Jamaican quickly expanded to hip hop, funk and soul. A one-year spell in NYC introduced him to the magical dance floors of The Loft and Body & Soul parties, as well as a new found love in (spacey) disco music. After settling down in London in late 2000, Cedric founded the collective Voices with kindred spirits Alex and Ramar, and since then they have been playing and promoting deep house and disco with regular events all across the city, having welcomed DJs like Victor Rosado or Daniel Wang. Throughout the years, Cedric has developed a keen interest and knowledge in sound, attracted especially by the warmth of vintage analogue equipment, which led him to start a new night called Beauty And The Beat. After participating at RBMA in Seattle in 2005 Cedric is currently working on his own compositions, trying to translate his musical vision onto wax. A trademark DJ set by Cedric Woo cannot be defined by genre or bpms as he combines everything from funk, rock, jazz, disco, deep house, left field nuggets, obscure grooves and forgotten classics, all linked together to create an atmosphere of psychedelic heaven.
