Main Stage - Live at InFiné Week, Paris

Aufgang

InFiné, France

The story of Aufgang began in the year 2000 when Rami Khalifé and Francesco Tristano met at the Juilliard School in New York City, where both studied piano. They soon started playing together, fueled by a genre defying love of music and a shared love for the house music clubs of the city. After a while they teamed up with similarly open minded - and musically gifted - drummer Aymeric Westrich before putting the band on hold while Khalifé worked as a composer, Tristano solidified his reputation as one of his generation's most appreciated pianists and Westrich took to producing hip hop and drumming for Cassius. In 2005 they reunited for an Aufgang performance at Barcelona's Sonar Festival after Sonar's booking team saw Khalifé and Tristano perform a version of Jeff Mills' 'The Bells' that had the audience - including Mills himself - in awe. And while their music is clearly based on modern electronic music, it has little to do with stale attempts at merely recreating it with live instruments, instead using it as a springboard for their own, uniquely organic excursions. The energy of their interaction has made them a staple of festival stages, with this set recorded at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris during InFiné Week a powerful point in case.
