Vincent Mason already was a highly skilled DJ by the time he entered high school in Brooklyn. Time spent keenly observing local DJs and rehearsing on decks presented to him by his mother proved well invested when he met Kelvin Mercer and David Jolicouer with whom he formed one of the most influential rap groups ever, De La Soul. Starting to work with madcap genius producer Prince Paul early on, they developed a sound that overcame the James Brown sample prerogative of the time, diving deep into jazz and the George Clinton back catalogue. Their debut album '3 Feet High and Rising' in 1989 proved an instant, platinum success and a trailblazer for New York's Native Tongues posse. They went on to continually release celebrated albums, with Maseo warping his skills along the way. This set is an excursion through the crates of the man they call Plug 3, covering the spectrum from golden age hip hop to soulful grooves across the board.
