Long-time Academy team member and confirmed vinyl addict Lars Vegas isn't just known for his productions as Karma - from downtempo waltzes to the odd Loft classic with 'Highpriestess' - or his time at the helm of the Groove Attack record store during what some see as the golden age of independent hip hop and underground soul in Europe. In certain circles, Lars still possesses a certain infamy for a cassette he made at the end of the '90s, when in his words "everybody and their mom had a label". Wanting to introduce some tranquility and spirituality at the turn of the millennium, when the prevailing mood was tending toward hysteria, he selected a mix of some of his favourite pop, folk and soul tunes, made 1500 copies of the tape, had a neat little cover manufactured in Japan, and gave copies away to all his friends near and far. The ripples spread even further, and Lars says: "It seemed a lot of people were actually touched by that little mix. Minimal techno dudes, indie rockers, crate diggers, drum & bass or broken beat heads - stopping me in the streets they were!" Recently Lars discovered a couple of unused covers at the back of a wardrobe, and decided to recreate that well-loved mix for the festive season - adding an extra couple of hours worth of music to the original 60 minute mix while he was at it. Mixed live on two turntables at a secret after dark venue in Cologne, this is an evening's worth of records selected for depth and clarity rather than rarity: to listen to with your country-loving dad, your crate digging friends, or maybe even your opera-loving aunt. Beach Boys' 'Until I Die' bridges side a & b of the original tape. Swing low!
