With his special blend of bossa nova, jazz and funk, Sergio Mendes has blessed us with more than 35 albums over the years. Originally training as a classical musician in his home town of Niteroi in Brazil, Mendes' love of jazz grew and he became a player on the burgeoning bossa nova scene in Rio in the late 1950s, playing with the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim. After moving to the US, Mendes signed to Herb Alpert's A&M label and released 'Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66', an album that went platinum thanks to the huge success of the single 'Mas Que Nada' (a Jorge Ben cover). By 1968, following more hits with his versions of 'The Look of Love', 'Fool On The Hill' and 'Scarborough Affair', Mendes was one of the biggest Brazilian stars in the world. His latest releases show the producer, composer, arranger, pianist and band leader to be as vibrant and vital today as he was when he was leading Brasil '66 to international superstardom.
