Headphone Highlights

Born Ruffians

Warp, Toronto, Canada

Originally hailing from Midlake, Ontario, Born Ruffians moved to Toronto before they first got noticed for their angular, tightly wound tracks. As a group, they were the anti-thesis of what people expected from a Toronto-based band: They were no collective, and chose to be a trio that relied on a strictly bare bones setup of drums, bass and guitar with a minimum amount of effects. Their love for opening up the rhythmic spaces resembles the approach of bands like the Feelies or Talking Heads, leaving plenty of room for Luke LaLonde's vocals. Their debut was a self titled EP on Warp in 2004, and since then they have played with everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Hot Chip or Caribou, who also enlisted LaLonde to sing on their track Jamelia. Compiled around the release of their second album 'Say It', these Headphone Highlights prove the Ruffians to be a band that knows where to look for the right hints.
