RJ Krohn trained his ear after high school when he took the role of producer DJ for the Columbus group MHz on Bobbito Garcia's label Fondle 'Em. But he really stretched his knack for sampling and rhythmic gift for drum programming when he signed to El-P's Def Jux label and began to excel at the art of tension and release, using his craftsmanship in the studio to dramatic effect. His debut LP Deadringer earnt him props around the globe, and it seemed like a new savior for instrumental hip hop had arrived, with a vivid comic-book imagination and intuitive grasp of narrative. Just as at home producing beats for rapper like Doom or Aceyalone as making his own artist LPs, RJD2 signed with XL Records after two albums as DefJux's reigning beatmaker. At XL he charted a new course away from sampling and his third LP 'The Third Hand' found him playing instruments and singing - to rolling psych rock effect. Most recently he's struck out solo, with his own label RJ's Electrical Connections, a deluxe re-issue of collected works 2002-2010, and a new LP The Colossus, which sees him once again walking hooky paths between psych rock, funky synths, soulful vocals, and crispy drums that are always in the pocket. Take an RJ detour!
