Headphone Highlights

New Young Pony Club

Modular, PIAS, London

New Young Pony Club are London based quintet Tahita Bulmer, Andy Spence, Lou Hayter, Igor Volk and Sarah Jones. Since their inception in 2004 they have already achieved plenty in their mission to get crowds pulsating. Inspired by LCD Soundsystem, The Stranglers and Gang Of Four their stylish brand of pounding electro disco pop crashed onto the scene with the release of their 'Ice Cream' 7". The limited edition pressing of a thousand copies sold out in just three days, demonstrating the buzz around them through the music press and cooler-than-thou blogs alike. They soon found a home with Modular Recordings, home to Wolfmother, The Avalanches and Ladyhawke and their debut album hit the streets in 2007 to much awe and rapture. It has taken them another couple of years to get round to releasing a follow up however, though 'The Optimist' hasn't been a let down, mixing brooding vocals and atmospheric flourishes with the synth-heavy beats that highlighted their first record. We find out what inspires so many people's favourite party band in their Headphone Highlights. Get ready, set, dance.
