Hailing from New York City, Ratatat guitarist Mike Stroud and synthesizer driver and producer Even Mast first met as students at Skidmore College. Back in 2001, they started to work together musically under the name of Cherry (which would later become the name of the final song in their debut album). Written and recorded at Mast's Crown Heights apartment in the heart of Brooklyn, the duo's debut album was released in 2004. It was almost entirely instrumental, except for some dialogue extracts at the ends of a few of the tracks. As well as creating their own material they are fond of producing the occasional remix, too, showcased in their Remix's Mixtape Volume 1 collection, where they dispelled any rumours of music snobbery by going all mainstream hip hop on us. Two years later came album number two, the strangely melancholic 'Classics', followed by another remix album and then LP3 and LP4 in 2008 and 2010 respectively. With a much braver approach to arrangements and featuring more instruments on the record than ever before, it is clear these Brooklynites have come far from the bedroom recordings of their youth.
