Formed in Preston, England by Wolverhampton-born Tjinder Singh, his brother Avtar, David Chambers and Ben Ayres and emerging from the ashes of The General Havoc, Cornershop made it's entrance. They first drew attention in the haze of the Riot Grrrl scene burning pictures of Morrissey on stage and at his EMI label offices in protest of his use of skin-head imagery and dubious lyrics employed at a time of heightened racist tension in Britain. Naming themselves after a stereotype referring to British Asians often owning street corner stores, they were never going to sit quietly. They released their debut long player 'Hold On It Hurts' in 1993, followed in 1995 with 'Woman's Gotta Have It'. Then their most widely noted track to date came about in the form of a Fatboy Slim remix of their song 'Brimful Of Asha' their tribute to prolific Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle and the entire Indian music industry in general. After a few releases with their friends at Rough Trade, Cornershop moved the program onto their own label Ample Play Records, under which they released their latest album 'Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast' to hand clapping across the board.
