Like many people staring out with limited technical possibilities and a seemingly unlimited amount of ideas, Jimmy Edgar moved from the tape loops, field recordings and beats of his youth to a style entirely his own. True, the gritty funk and techno of his hometown Detroit shine through, but they are made to feel at home with everything from jazz through Chicago house to traces of punk (as much in spirit as in sound). The result is future-minded electronic music that has made sense on labels like Warp, Poker Flat or Merck, and, most recently, !K7. Since then he has moved on to be involved in an amazing variety of projects, from fashion photography to an album project with The Beta Band's Steve Mason to a long list of half-confirmed or rumored musical collaborations. Here, he talks about his work under this variety of guises and his skills, which extend way beyond his musical prowess. It is crystal clear to us (and will be to you) that Jimmy Edgar is out for living life to the very fullest.
