With his marquee voice, laid-back style, and Banana Klan backing, Rodney Smith is the undisputed cool ruler of UK hip hop. From a moment of spiritual awakening when he walked past a soundsystem in his home area of Stockwell as a kid, Rodney Smith went on to become one of the genre's defining artists after he started to listen to Rakim and "run tings" with his crew IQ Procedure in the mid '90s. His solo debut, 1999's Brand New Second Hand on Big Dada, was riddled with dub-heavy beatsmithery and fierce wordplay straight outta South London, and did a lot to pave the way for the grime movement. And Rodney's been on a roll ever since: To date, he's knocked five more albums for Big Dada and delivered sizzling guest 16's for the likes of Coldcut, TY and Mr Scruff, all boasting a singular aesthetic that is equally aware of its roots as it is innovative. Witness the fitness!
