Alan Abrahams, the man behind Portable emerged out of the ruins of a post-apartheid South Africa. He grew up in an impoverished Cape Town township, ironically tagged "Beverly Hills". Inspired by the first batch of Chicago house records, the foundations were laid for his future in music. Experimenting with ways of combining traditional African rhythms with the 4/4 template of house, Abrahams completed various projects in South Africa, most of which gave a commentary to the political turmoil of the country then. Abrahams inevitably became frustrated with the geographic isolation of the country and relocated to London in 1997. In the UK, Abrahams went on to complete various releases for internationally recognized labels such as Context and Background before setting up Sued Electronic towards the end of 2002. He has since gone on to release many more records for various international labels such as Scape, Karat, Spectral, Mutek, Revolver and his renowned live sets have taken him to various cities across the globe. Next to applauded 12"s for Perlon or Musik Krause and a move to Berlin, Abrahams is also known for a project on Ann Arbor's Spectral imprint under the "Body Code" pseudonym. Bridging the gap between house and techno, songs and instrumentals, Portable is a man with many voices and faces. Here he releases the pressure with a special set from the Elevate Festival in Graz.
