Go Bang Radio - Vol 3 - Roots Of Hip Hop

Andrew Mason aka Monk One

Wax Poetics, RBMA

Monk-One has been bringing his can do attitude to New York City's music scene for well over a decade now. After originally chopping out riffs on his axe for several punk funk outfits, he took to the decks in the early '90s, playing lofts and selling mixtapes. The Monk-One moniker was born when his friend opened hip hop store Fat Beats and persuaded Monk to create special mixes for the shop. Shortly after he joined the Underground Railroad Radio Show, a flagship show for hip hop in NYC since 1991, and scooped plaudits from listeners for combination of rare original breaks with the latest beats. More recently, Monk and friend Andre Torres decided to offer an alternative to the hip hop magazines available, and created the tome to crates called Wax Poetics. Respected by discerning diggers the world over, Wax Po has become known for its in-depth interviews and meticulous attention to detail. Never one to to rest on his laurels, some of Monk's collaborations and productions have also seen the light of day, while a mix CD called 'Monk's Dream' was released officially by Turntable Lab as well as EPs and 7"s on Names You Can Trust. Open-minded and open-eared, he is still throwing parties in NYC and abroad. You can get in touch with Monk via this cute email address: monk@waxpoetics.com
