What do you get, if you put Roger Troutman, Kraftwerk, Radiohead and New Jersey garage don Todd Edwards in one jar and put it on the dubstep shelf? Most probably something like Darkstar. Named like a John Carpenter movie and signed to London's premier dubstep-and-beyond label Hyperdub, the duo's combination of UK garage rhythms and more conventional song structures with robotic vocals and star-eyed synthesizers is sometimes overwhelmingly beautiful. Tipped for greatness by Radiohead, the old boy NME and of course Kode9, the future seems to be a bright one for James Young and Aiden Whalley. Here we have them with a live mix from the FACT magazine party at Camden's Lock Tavern. What did they say about Carpenter's flick? Bombed out in space with a spaced out bomb!
