The Phenomenal Handclap Band might be the quintessential New York act these days. A eight headed collective (plus a long list of guest singers, from Jon Spencer to Lady Tigra), who meld the sounds of prog rock revivalism, proto disco, psychedelica, soul rave-ups and the occasional hand clap into a heady mix that transports just about everything that's exciting about the complete Numero Group discography into the here and now. Led by the producers and DJs Daniel Colls and Sean Marquand, they pull off the neat trick of bringing a great record collection to life, all while representing their hometown. That, and their freewheelin' spirit and production style, has led to comparisons to LCD Soundsystem, but whoever has seen their crowded, ferocious live set knows they're on their own level entirely. And anyone who hears their headphone highlights will know their taste does run deep.
