Of Montreal are your run of the mill former twee band, turned funky, beat heavy theatrical pop extravaganza, taking Funkadelic's dress code over the top while singing joyfully celebratory songs about depression, death and feeling displaced as a US-American southerner living in Norway; selling their latest record in formats such as t-shirts, button sets, wall decals, tote bags, and a paper lantern (digital download code included, of course). A record, we might want to add, that sees singer Kevin Barnes slip into the role of Georgie Fruit, a character he describes as 'a black man who has been through multiple sex changes. He's been a man and a woman, and then back to a man. He's been to prison a couple of times. In the 70s he was in a band called Arousal, a funk rock band sort of like the Ohio Players. Then he went through a few different phases.' Right now, we are trying to track down the remaining master tapes of Arousal's recordings, but seeing that this may take a while, why not check out Of Montreal as they themselves go through one of their different phases. And if they'll ask you 'Is that my concorde on a launcher?' you may not be able to look and confirm, but it'll dang well sound like it is.
