Artists don't come with more credentials than Joe Bataan, who anticipated the disco movement with his 'latin soul' sound, had one of the first ever charting rap records (in 1979!) and who's 'Salsoul' album gave the seminal disco label it's name.. Widely hailed as the inventor of the Latin Soul genre, Bataan can no doubt also be considered one of the originators of Disco itself and we were shocked to discover that this Broad Casting performance was to be his UK debut - despite a career that has spanned 5 decades. Picked as a dream collaborator by Stones Throw's James Pants (who plays percussion on all of the tracks featured here) Joe was backed by his wife Yvonne (vocals), long-term collaborator Peter "Chuckie" Quintero (percussion) and a stellar line-up of British Jazz, Funk and Latin musicians from Grupo X. Whilst the 'conga' line led through the venue by Joe himself did not translate that well into radio, the atmosphere of this incredible performance is nevertheless beautifully captured here in this multi-track recording made exclusively for RBMA Radio. You can also catch the latin versions of James Pants' own material in another Broad Casting special that also features his DJ set.
