Gilbert Cohen is better known as DJ Gilb'r. While growing up in the south of France in Nice, he realised that music would become the driving force in his life. The offer to play twice weekly in a Parisian club in the early '90s encouraged his jones and made possible a move to the capital. Being heavily affected by the likes of midschool hip hop stalwarts Public Enemy, De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers, Gilb'r discovered that his heart lay with hip hop. Landing a job as programmer for the groundbreaking radio station, Nova, Gilb'r learned that there is more to music than just one genre. Although he still keeps track of his first love, he has acquired expertise in such different styles as nu jazz, house and drum 'n' bass. He became known as France's drum 'n' bass figurehead, playing together with LTJ Bukem and even alongside the legendary Fabio and Grooverider at their infamous 'Promised Land' parties at London's The End. After spending some years with Radio Nova, Gilb'r decided to move on and launch the commercially successful and critically acclaimed label, Versatile Records. Thus far, people like I:Cube, Joakim, Phil Asher and DJ Gregory have released future classics on the imprint. Gilb'r himself records with I:Cube as Chateau Flight and carries on his journey to discover beautiful music without boundaries.
