Reuben Wilson was one of many soul-jazz organists to emerge in the USA in the late '60s, but he was one of only a handful to be signed to Blue Note. Between 1968 and 1971, he recorded five sessions for the label and whilst none of these records received a huge amount of acknowledgment at the time, they became popular later with a whole new generation through being sampled on hip hop records (Nas, ATCQ) and played out by early acid jazz DJs like Gilles Peterson. After Blue Note he recorded for other classic labels such as Groove Merchant or Chess Cadet for whom he recorded the dance floor jazz and rare groove classic Got to Get Your Own. In fact in this interview, Reuben points out that it was this record that Gilles Peterson was playing when he legendarily coined the term acid jazz.
