When it comes to country rap, Bernard Freeman is just like President Carter: the untouchable elder statesman who manages to compete with the generation ADD's ringtone rubbish, with lyrics that actually make sense. The waterproof vet who still slaps out those hot sixteens as if he'd just entered a Be-like-Weezy efficiency contest. The undisputed leader of the pack who's always happy to give his seal of approval to anyone who has more to bring to the table than just a big name or budget - ask Maya, Wale and Dizzee. Still, his way to undisputed hip hop royalty was a rocky one: although setting the foundations for the current success of artists like T.I. and Young Jeezy in the early '90s as one half of the group UGK with Pimp C, it took this Texas titan almost 20 years to score his first No. 1 spot on the Billboard Charts with Underground Kingz in 2007. 20 years in which Bun B carried the torch for the franchise while the Pimp was away in prison - as he does now after the tragic death of his partner-in-rhyme last December. Cause it's UGK for life, you already know. At least you should!
