Ralph Cumbers aka Bass Clef, has lived, worked, recorded and performed in both Bristol and East London and the music he makes seems to reflect this. Avoiding the use of a computer, Ralph records analogue basslines, and machine programmed drums onto four-track tape. In the words of his label Blank tapes, Bass Clef is the sound of structure created Black Ark-style, on the fly in the mix-down, through guitar pedals and FX units. This Bass Clef appearance show for Broad Casting at Cargo is a similarly raw and inventive experience as he weaves drums, samples live instrumentation through his echo box, single-handedly re-inventing dubstep.
