Primavera Sound Special on RBMA Radio
The Primavera Sound festival exceeded even its own high standards this year, as record numbers of festival goers took an early summer holiday and descended on the Barna coastline. Over 100,000 revellers soaked up the sun and sounds, and among the many highlights we managed to check out were certified dub shaman Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and reverb-drenched Point Break lovers Surfer Blood on the Pitchfork stage, as well as kaleidoscopic chameleons Tortoise, original punk funksters Liquid Liquid, sisterly duo Cocorosie, and baggy north country boys The Charlatans.
It's the smart programming of quality music whatever the genre, that's seen Primavera grow exponentially over the years. Innovation and cojones are the main ingredients that Primavera keep their ears out for, whether it's from recent pace-setters like The XX or Grizzly Bear, or influential icons like dystopian synth visionary Gary Numan or Van Dyke Parks.
One extra twist that this year's edition brought to proceedings was the creation of PrimaveraPro. Inspired by the burgeoning number of music professionals who have already used the festival as a meeting point, PrimaveraPro brought two new stages to showcase bands. The Adidas Originals stage was programmed with international acts coming to Europe, and the Sounds of Spain highlighted the rich seam of local music scenes. PrimaveraPro is set to be a regular feature, bringing plenty of new bands to the festival public.
Teaming up with All Tomorrow's Parties has added another string to Primavera's bow, helping them bring seminal acts from independent scene's around the globe - like Geoff Barrow's kraut psych trio Beak>, or big apple dunkers Les Savy Fav. But the real responsibility didn't fall to the big names performing on the Main Stage… the weekend's most important job of entertaining the kids down the Minimúsica on Saturday and Sunday fell to Manos de Topo, Fred and Son, El Gran Amant, and Sedaiós, among others. Respect!
