Dissonanze special on RBMA Radio
In the ten years of its existence, Rome’s Dissonanze Festival has earned itself a reputation for threading a lineage with its programming from Italo, krautrock and other early electronics to South London’s latest 138 treks, and bringing many artists to Italy for the first time. And they don’t need 27 stages to do so: everything happens within the centrally located Palazzo dei Congressi, plus a little warm-up session and afterhour on Friday, and a closing A/V show at the Ara Pacis on Sunday. This year’s anniversary line-up – the tenth edition of the festival takes place from May 21 to May 23, 2010 – is exceptionally exceptional, selecting a fine balance between originals like Gil Scott-Heron and modern innovators like Shackleton.
Friday starts with a session at the Chiostro del Bramante, a cultural centre a handful of miles north of the congress palace. Performing will be Rejkjavik-based composer Ben Frost, electro-acoustic experimentalist Demetrio Castellucci aka Black Fanfare, Eli Subrack aka Assume Vivid Astro Focus, and Nico Vascellari who’ll present his new Niños Du Brasil project. After the main concert featuring Moritz von Oswald Trio and Richie Hawtin as Plastikman, Neon Indian, Tim Sweeney and Rub-N-Tug will keep things going until five o’ clock in the morning at the Room 26.
On Saturday, three floors will be opened at the Palazzo. Mass_Prod from Zurich, Pantha du Prince, Seth Troxler, Joris Voorn and the first Academy lecturer ever, Jeff Mills, will be at the controls in the main room, while Nosaj Thing, Darkstar, Martyn, Shackleton and the Academy’s very own Marco Passarani hold it down at the Foyer Aula Magna, and the beautiful terrace will see performances from Gonjasufi & Gaslamp Killer, Jamie Lidell, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, King Midas Sound, and the legendary Gil Scott-Heron.
On Sunday evening, proceedings will be topped off by audiovisual performances from Edwin van der Heide, Nexus, Quayola and the United Visual Artists, at the Ara Pacis.
One thing the generations of Romans have carried down with them through the years is that sense of carpe diem – you never know what the future holds, so celebrate the time you've got (or tune in when we present some of the weekend’s best sets and performances afterwards, at least).
