Disco is a five-letter word that can have as many meanings, connotations and coverage as the famous four-letter word. It can be an actual location and sanctuary as much as the description of a musical genre or even defamation. It can be nu, neo, space, electronic and sometimes even house or Balearic (this one is still awaiting the first profound scientific research). But what the heck, y’all know that. Here at RBMA’s radio transmission headquarter it is a compliment more than anything else. Just type it in the show finder and see the wonderful world of merry music that will unfold…or take our sincere recommendations.
The current interest in disco music new or old wouldn’t be where it is today without a certain deus ex machina in the truest sense of the term. Morgan Geist appeared with his Metro Area project (alongside Darshan Jesrani) when dance music was in a serious drought. Of course, the Jersey boys didn’t save the world single-handedly (although their first three singles made you feel like that), but as the revered boss Springsteen likes to say, “you can’t start a fire without a spark”! We are indeed burning for Geist on the regular. His Personal show has now attained full age, clocking in at Volume 18 and has a special birthday party with sleaze master DJ Bobby Viteritti. There is no way that you can get more disco than that – unless you are Daniel Wang maybe.
The Balihu mastermind and long-time confederate of Morgan Geist just released an Anthology via Amsterdam’s Rush Hour that looks back on the history of his eccentric, magnificent and path-breaking label. Either take that in or check some of his live DJ appearances (add the mental picture of a topless guy with a tambourine) or his special-baked Fireside Chat. What a radio voice!
Another chronic guest is Maurice Fulton. A pseudonym enthusiast and heaven-sent producer for voices like MU or Kathy Diamond, this bass line expert, disco nomad and future classic creator is as home with caramelized Prelude or West End styled boogie cuts as he is with spaced-out we-still-have-to-find-a-name-for-this-tracks or daredevil 808-jams. Just put BubbleTease Communications on your dial.
You like your mirror ball to be more indie? Pas de souci! James Murphy to the rescue. LCD Soundsystem’s front man cannot deny his love for the great musical heritage of New York City. Otherwise, he wouldn’t put up Beats In Space captain Tim Sweeney as the official DFA DJ, get Holy Ghost!, the Canyons or The Juan Maclean on the roster nor play this infectious stuff himself together with his mate Mahoney.
Contagious is also the word that fits House Of House. Premiered on the hyper-exclusive boutique Whatever We Want, their Rushing To Paradise was one of the surprise hits of 2009 and a favourite of almost every DJ on this planet who still has a heartbeat. Here we have the duo live at Vienna’s Pratersauna, paying homage to Larry Levan and Junior Vasquez in identical fashion. By the way, past lecturer and grey eminence DJ Harvey recently has remixed them and he can be found with two unique recordings from a few years back. As you might know, it’s almost the same with wine – the older…
That is exactly why Danny Krivit, Leroy Burgess, Jorge Socarras and John Morales are still too young for the scrap heap. Listen and learn.
New York City might have been the hub of the disco world and still plays an important part, but you just have to take an Aeroplane across the Atlantic to see what some adaptation, transformation and innovation can do. Next to the dynamic duo from Belgium, you will find the bonfire romantic Mudd and his all-important Claremont 56 label, krautrock stylings with Emperor Machine and a party out of bounds called Horse Meat Disco. Their former secret congregations at The Eagle went on to conquer the world with legions of male facial hair and music aficionados.
The phenomenon of the edit did the same and with Mark E as well as razor blade fetishist Greg Wilson and his French counter part Pilooski we made sure some heavy editing takes places.
The Viking invasion from Oslo (Prins Thomas, Todd Terje and Lindstrom) is still as vital as the new sensation from Hamburg: The mighty Tensnake is not only graced with high-flying end-of-the-year poll results, but also with a miraculous pop music sensibility and remix skills (for the likes of Junior Boys, The Faint or Sally Shapiro). You see, plenty of quality meat to chew on. We salute you with the eternal words of Chic instead of a cheap Lady Gaga punch line: dance, dance, dance!
