Dub Be Good To Me

The London-Kingston love affair on RBMA Radio

Dub Be Good To Me

Ever since the '60s, Jamaica has been a towering influence on club culture, putting its own Caribbean twist on music conventions and introducing sound system culture to the rest of the world. With a style and swagger all of its own, the effects of reggae, dub, dancehall, and their many variations, are still essential elements in any dance worth its salt - while various Jamaican outposts in cities all over the planet have been re-imagining the sound in whole new ways. This week, we thread a journey from London to Kingston, from pioneers to new school steppers, who are riding the wave of the echo that never fades.

London might be considered an epi-centre for the latest re-workings of dub culture, and indeed it's pretty hard to keep up with the mutating stream of caribbean lilt, bass weight, and urban production values, that inform London's club sonics. But none of it would have been possible without some serious groundwork from sound system pioneers like Channel One and Aba-Shanti-I. Mixing conscious lyrics with chest-rattling vibrations, both these sounds have played a pivotal role in shaping the dubby styles of today. Studio producers like Mad Professor and Adrian Sherwood have also had a vital impact, turning out dubs by the truckload, and playing the mixer like an instrument. Meanwhile, DJs like David Rodigan and Earl Gateshead were bringing dub and reggae to the people, and providing a sanctuary in sound for disaffected youth.

Nowadays the sounds might have changed, but the vibe's still the same - dubplate rudebwoys like Skream and Benga fly the flag for steppers around the globe, pulling major label acts like Eve and La Roux into their dubby vortex. At the same time Mala and Silkie are pushing weighty breaks and soulful, spiritual messages into new forms, while producers like Toddla T, L-Vis 1990, and the Major Lazer duo of Switch and Diplo, are deep exploring a soca-fied dancehall flex.

Of course, the cap has to be doffed to our Kingston originators. An iconic voice and effortless bridge between Kingston and London has to be Horace Andy. Gracing the mic since the late '60s and soundtracking the tops of the reggae charts throughout the '70s, he came back to prominence through the '90s after teaming up with Mad Professor and Massive Attack. Horace Andy has also worked with drum 'n' bass duo Sly & Robbie, who rank as one of the most recorded rhythm section partnerships in modern music history. Another pair of kick 'n' bass collaborators were Steely & Cleevie, who were King Jammy's house band through the '80s and were amongst the first to carry the reggae swing into the realm of electronic drum machines and synths.

Whether it's murky clubs or sunny Notting Hill Carnival, whether it's raw and minimal or percussive and smooth - the Jamaican dub sensibility has translated across the world, and pervades all music styles. Simply put, it's an adventure in sound that will never cease, and that's echo-logical.
