Mama Africa is bristling with musical innovation now more than ever. The influences of Africa stretch far and wide, with inter-continental polyrhythms reaching the live stage as well as the producers studio. Groups like Stones Throw's Karl Hector & The Malcouns and The Heliocentrics wear their afro-influences on their sleeves, mixing spaced-out electronics and psychedelic jazz with abyssinian grooves from pioneers like Mulatu Astatke.
Mulatu stands alone in African music for mixing traditional Ethiopian intervals with jazz forms to create a hazy amtospheric world unlike any other. Jimi Tenor is another live performer to embrace the influence of Lagos and the late great Fela Kuti, more specifically by teaming up with Kabukabu, a group of West African musicians dedicated to spreading the legacy of The Shrine and afrobeat. Across the pond, New York group Antibalas also take Fela's legacy into new directions, while still preserving the fierce rhythms and political power of his music.
In the studio, producers have been twisting their version of african rhythms for time, but some manage to distill the sunshine and rejoice better than others. Radioclit have been flexing their afro-techno party jams since 2005, while Osunlade is one of the original pioneers of deep ancestral house inspired by the Nigerian hi-hat shuffle and spiritual Ifa traditions.
But it's not just the afro-influenced electronic styles that are currently sweeping european and american dancefloors - ground-breaking innovators from all over the African continent are also throwing their own styles into the global mix. None more so than South Africa, which has become a melting pot of african tradition and european innovation in the clubs. Culoe de Song and Blackcoffee are two such producers putting a hex on dancers and DJs around the world with their deep spiritual house and epic extended arrangements, while Thibo Tazz and Richard The Third take the party in techier, bassier directions, that reflect the hectic syncopations of african urban life.
Finally there are the true legends of African music - the ambassadors that bring their heritage and stories and spread the word through song. Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango both carry mad weight when it comes to the community-conscious nature of their music, and despite their different styles, the messages of liberty and unity is as plain as day. But perhaps the innovator who reigns supreme in terms of global influence is master of afrobeat rhythms Tony Allen. He's already influenced generations of music makers from James Brown, Clyde Stubblefield, Jabbo Starks, and Roy Ayers, to beat heads like TY, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Waajeed, to techno nomads Moritz von Oswald and Carl Craig.
