A couple of weeks ago, two true powerhouses in electronic music – one iconic, one well on its way – hooked up for an epic night at Grande Halle de la Vilette in Paris: Warp + Ed Banger = WARP/ED. Red Bull Music Academy Radio was there with the flash recorders, catching sets by class of Academy '07 Hudson Mohawke, fellow Glaswegian Rustie, Clark, Krazy Baldhead, and the Malcom McLaren of the nu-rave generation, Pedro Winter aka Busy P. Tune into the sounds of a warp/ed dimension.
Super-busy P opened the night with some proper Vangelis pathos before humbly celebrating his own Pedrophilia, throwing some Acton beats wizardry in the mix, sending kudos to the electric friends from Sheffield with Luke Vibert’s Acidisco (released on Warp in 2003), and setting the stage for the performance of one of of his most longstanding signees, Krazy Baldhead.
Swinging between hip hop and electro elements, Krazy Baldhead, despite the k-k-k-razy name, was for a long while the most mellow act on Ed Banger. If that is saying anything. It might be the ten years he spent at a music academy, his deep love for jazz, or the simple fact that music by Miles Davis, The Chemical Brothers or even Peter Hook evokes the same passion in him. His all around versatility does a lot to prove that Ed Banger is more than a one trick pony. Still, listening to his WARP/ED set, you'll rather start moving your legs than scratching your head…
Signing with Warp at the age of 20 whilst still at University, Clark is considered to be the most warp-ish of all the young Warp artists. He's definitely a lot closer to Aphex Twin and Autechre than he is to Maximo Park or Gang Gang Dance anyway and has certainly benefited from Warp's hands-off approach to his creativity. In the eight years since he was invited into the stable, he has delivered five albums, and his musicianship and musical style has developed and grown in all the right directions. Here’s an exclusive excerpt from his live show at the WARP/ED night out in Paris.
Hudson Mohawke, whose Butter LP will be released next week on Warp, finally destroyed the dance with his signature sound of Atari 8-bit crunch, digi soul and wonky beats. Here’s a new mix, specially recorded to commemorate the WARP/ED night in Paris, featuring some vintage Cheryl Lynn and Joyce Sims, his own 3/4 Heart remix, and tunes by fellow Academy alumni Samiyam, Alan1 and Dorian Concept, amongst many other synth encounters of the third kind.
Another exclusive WARP/ED Session comes courtesy of Rustie, another young producer from the Scottish metropolis who’s been creating some of the most mind -boggling, genre-straddling electronic music of recent years. Stepping away from his field-tested concept of marrying the energy of hyphy with the low-slung bass of dubstep and the stuttering swagger of now-school electronics, Rustie goes from original Maybach Music to obscure 808 pop to new jack swing on this one, with some of his own aquacrunk classics added as bonus track.
In his WARP/ED closing set Pedro eventually takes us back to ’86, ’88 and Novemer ’09… good life!
