Warp Records has been synonymous with quality-controlled independent music since the turn of the 90's, and by sticking to their original vision of working together with exceptional artists, they've gone from strength to strength. From the very start they've always looked forward, viewing changes in musical styles with optimism rather than opportunism.
It all started as a small record shop in Sheffield, UK. In 1987, Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell found themselves in the midst of a rave revolution - knee deep in US imports and huge warehouse parties. Local DJs started making their own tunes, and so Steve and Rob saw it was a good time to start a label.
The first artists on Warp were the Forgemasters, Nightmares On Wax, and LFO, who ushered in a new era of English electronic club music. Pioneering a bass-heavy early techno sound of the north, tracks like LFO's 'LFO', and Nightmares On Wax's 'Aftermath', spear-headed a UK chart invasion and put bleep firmly on the map.
The map was quickly snatched up by artists like Autechre, Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin, Mark Pritchard and the Jedi Knights, and The Black Dog and Plaid - all pulling electronic music in their own directions, and making Warp Records instantly recognisable as a label whose ears were watched and cherished by DJs and music lovers around the world.
Good job Warp have a business sense that is a forward-looking as its roster. They were one of the first labels to have an online shop, taking orders for CDs and records and shipping them out and this also primed them to embrace mp3 technology and be one of the first online download stores. Bleep.com and Warp Mart have dared to go where many other established labels feared to tread, and their courage has been rewarded by becoming one of the most established mp3 sites on the net. What's more, Warp's business ethics have to be applauded, and they take the boring stuff like accounts very seriously. In an industry of shysters and bootleggers, the fact that Warp pay people the amount they say, when they say, is one of the main reasons why they're still in business.
But Warp wouldn't be Warp if they rested on their laurels or past glories - championing new sounds, they've once again proved to be setting the pace, releasing albums by Jamie Lidell, Clark , Gang Gang Dance, and Tim Exile, as well as long players by veterans pushing things forward like Prefuse 73, Maximo Park, Squarepusher and Mira Calix. There's also plenty of Academy fam on the Warp roster, with Flying Lotus, Harmonic 313, and Hudson Mohawke all stepping up with heavy-weight platters that will more than likely define the club sonics of the late noughties. Tune into the sounds of a warped dimension.
