Rototom Sunsplash originated at the Rototom Disco Club, located in Galo di Spilimbergo in Northern Italy. Already hosting shows by some of the biggest names in reggae, these enthusiasts drew up the first Sunsplash festival in 1994. By 1998 it had moved to a seaside resort close to Venice, the duration extended from three to five day, the audience numbers moving well into the five digit regions - but the initial spirit still shaped the festival, with percussion classes, public discussions and cinema tents encouraging cultural exchange beyond the shared joy in music. At the turn of the century, Sunsplash moved again, this time to Udine and a further extension of the festival time to eight and finally ten days, it attracted enthusiasts from around the world, eager to share the experience. Sadly, authorities in Udine were less eager to share, forcing the festival to leave the country in 2010, moving to Benicassim in Spain, where it once again resides by the sea, waiting for moe than a week of spontaneous cultural outbursts to happen. Exodus: movement of Jah people!
