Sarajevo Jazz Festival

The Sarajevo Jazz Festival is an annual celebration of jazz music, and has been a regular attraction since 1997, grown considerably in popularity while still maintaining its grass roots feel. The week-long event features well known jazz musicians from around the world but also invites new and cutting-edge artists for late night performances in several venues around the city. One of the premier jazz festivals on the world circuit, it gives a valuable platform for Bosnian and international players alike, and keeps its initial focus of developing and teaching jazz traditions and music to younger generations. The Bosanski Kulturni Centar has proved the centre piece of four main venues, and has seen historical performances from the likes of Django Bates, Brad Mehldau, Bugge Wesseltoft, Jon Hassell, Nicola Conte, Jazzanova, and a whole host of other players - all inspired by the Ottoman achitecture of Stari Grad and the courage of its people to dig deep into their improv roots and pull out the solo of their careers. The freedom to dance never felt so good.
