Rhodes Music Radio

One of South Africa's foremost university radio stations, RMR has been pioneering the airwaves of Grahamstown since 1981. One recurring theme for this fiercely independent radio station is their broadcast marathons - not just a way to bring the community together and raise money for good causes, but it's what helped convince the monopolising South African Broadcasting Corporation to give them a temporary license for the first time in 1991 - a first for South African broadcasting at that time too. RMR doesn't just stand for chit chat and great music - they take a stand for the disenfranchised and don't give up just because of a few years of legal wranglings! Since their first license, they also like breaking records for the longest continual broadcast, by a group (394 hours) and by one person (126 hours). Now housed in a newly refurbished studio on campus, the radio continues to grow from strength to strength.
