Southport Weekender

Southport Weekender

For over two decades, Southport's three-day weekend music festival has set the bench mark for dancers and music lovers alike. Situated in a Pontins holiday resort on the north west coast of England, the weekender started out as an extension of the Northern soul scene, evoking the good times of original clubs like the Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca. Soul music was celebrated every minute of the 72 hours, with record fairs catering to the collectors, while legendary singers were invited to perform alongside the leading Northern soul DJs. Then as house fans began to discover the music they loved was rooted in Detroit soul and Chicago disco, Southport Weekender found favour again, and the chalets of Pontins began to shake to a more electronic beat. Now renowned as an ever-solid indoor dance marathon embodying soulful dance music across the board, the atmosphere is legendary and attracts serious selectors, from regulars like Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay, to overseas heavweights like Kerri Chandler and Kenny Dope, or new school spinners like DâM-FunK and Floating Points. Just minutes from the beach, on a clear morning you can take a break from the dancefloor revelations, and admire the view of Mount Snowdon across the sea, before catching a quick disco nap before cutting some rug again. But while the setting is perfect, and the music and sound is some of the best around, it's the audience that makes Southport Weekender the celebration it's become renowned for - friendly party people who love the music and know how to have a good time.
