Smart Bar

You have to do something right, if you stay in the nightclub business for more than 25 years. Smart Bar began in 1982 as a way to bring the visual, performing, experimental and fringe arts communities together with the city’s then-burgeoning DJ culture. As such, Smart Bar became a quick success. Then groundbreaking, now legendary DJs like Frankie Knuckles would spin regularly while bands like Ministry and Trent Reznor showcased their new "industrial" music by playing tapes of freshly recorded tracks for the crowd. In early 2006, Smart Bar re-launched with a new design and new sound system and has since then hosted many a nights with new school kings like Diplo, European techno or minimalism from Dan Bell and the M_nus camp as well as DFA acts such as Juan MacLean while not forgetting about Chicago’s own history and legends like Derrick Carter or the aforementioned Frankie Knuckles. Stay tuned for some 'On The Floor!' action, right from the Smart Bar tape deck.
